West University Place- often called West University or West U for short, is a city located in the heart of the Houston metropolitan area, you’ll find tree lined streets, fabulous homes, and safe neighborhoods. It offers the perfect combination of quiet, small town America, with the convenience of big city attractions.
The city was developed in 1917 by Ben Hooper, a former Tennessee governor. The name "West University Place" originated from its proximity to Rice Institute (now Rice University). The city incorporated in 1924 because Houston was reluctant to extend power lines that far from the city center.
The "West U Downtown" is a small strip of businesses in the heart of West University Place.
Subdivisions inside West University Place include Rice Court, Pemberton, Colonial Terrace, Sunset Terrace, Cunningham Terrace, Evanston, Matthews Place, Kent Place, Monticello, Virginal Court, Belle Court, College Court Place, Collegeview, Preston Place, Pershing Place, Academy, Quenby Court, Bissonnet Place, Fairhaven, College Park, and Krenzler Courts.
